Richard Andrew “Ricky” Shearer has lived a life marked by a strong passion for science, astronomy, technology, and exploration. He has worked as a computer programmer for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, combining his technical skills with his interest in the natural world.
Ricky’s fascination with astronomy has led him to experience several remarkable scientific events and destinations. He was a former member of the Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society and had the opportunity to tour the Green Bank Telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope. His interest in space also took him to both the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
In 2024, Ricky experienced another memorable astronomical event when he witnessed the total solar eclipse near the Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio.
Beyond his interest in science and space, Ricky has also had the opportunity to experience major sporting events in American history. He attended the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
