Malcolm Wigand Heckman

"May your dream come true!"
1939 - 2018

Mal was born in Syracuse, NY.  As an infant, his family moved to Allentown, PA, where he went to school, graduating from Allentown High School and attending Muhlenberg College. He loved to play football and watch football games.  He was employed by Mack Truck, Inc.  He is a past president of the Allentown Jaycees and was active in Boy Scouts.  He was a council member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

In 1975, Mack Truck transferred him to New Jersey.  He, his wife, and family of 7 children moved to Maplewood NJ.  While there, he was Committee Chairman of Boy Scout Troop 81; he is a past president of the NJ Numismatic Association and a member of several local Numismatic Associations.  He was co-owner and publisher of the Classical Coin Newsletter.  He was an authority and collector of Ancient Coins. He received many awards for his coin activities.  Many of his coins are now in Museums around the world.

In 1991, he fulfilled his dream of owning his own business when he and his wife, Joanne, purchased and managed several motels in Wildwood, NJ.  They owned that business for 12 years and then retired.  While there, he was President of the Greater Wildwoods Hotel/Motel Association.

After selling the motels, they moved to Galloway, NJ.  After 17 years of serious coin collecting, traveling the world, and the joy of gardening, he and his wife moved to Stone Mountain, GA.  Three of their sons lived in the greater Atlanta area and encouraged them to move closer.  In 2017, they moved to Park Springs, a continuous care retirement community.  Shortly after moving, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Renal Cancer.  He entered a trial study at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, where he received experimental immunology treatments for 3+ months, and then entered Hospice care at Park Springs.  Even though he knew his life was soon to be over, he was glad to be part of a study to help others with his condition in the future.

Mal loved everything related to space, including Star Trek. He frequently said that one of his regrets in life was that he would not be alive to go to the moon or see humans living on other planets. While he may or may not know it, he will now make it to the moon.
