Al Appleton was born in Edgerton, Wisconsin. At the age of 17, Al enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served as a Dental Technician Apprentice. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
In 1958, Al went to work for North American Aviation as a machine operator. Over the next 32 years, he advanced his career to Director of Manufacturing, Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International. Al devoted his career to the aerospace industry, winning numerous awards for innovative time and cost-saving techniques in the manufacturing of the space Shuttle engines. Given his Top Secret security clearance, Al regularly consulted with military leaders, NASA, and astronauts regarding the manufacturing aspect of upcoming space Shuttle flights. His professional life helped shape the technology that powered space flight and exploration. He loved living during the golden age of space exploration.
After retiring in 1990, Al remained fascinated with space travel, UFO sightings, and alien encounters. He believed we are not alone.
Al was known for his easy smile, sharp wit, and generous heart.
He took joy in being with family and friends. When physically able he had a passion for golf and could be found on the fairway sharing stories and perfecting his swing with his favorite golfing buddies, the Stucco Busters. He loved to travel and cruise, exploring exotic places during the day and in the evenings, hitting the casino, listening to music and dancing.
He believed in living life to the fullest and never missed a chance to have a good time. Whether at family gatherings, a backyard barbecue, playing poker with the guys, or teasing the ladies he was an entertaining and fun guy.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, light-heartedness, and a reminder to savor the good moments, stay strong during the difficult times, and enjoy the ride, your way.
